Grilled Cheese Sandwiches: A New Holiday Tradition

The holidays are sweet thanks to Christmas cookies, fruitcake, candy canes and eggnog, of course. But according to the SugarScience at UCSF, it’s not just the weather outside that’s frightening, “Growing scientific evidence shows that eating too much added sugar is linked to serious diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and liver disease.”  The antidote to all that sugar? Grilled cheese sandwiches made with Fromage From Europe!

Grilled cheese sandwiches may not be sweet, but they are loved. According to a recent survey conducted by YouGov.com, grilled cheese is the most popular sandwich in the country. Marlena Spieler, author of Grilled Cheese: 50 Recipes to Make You Melt says “ Grilled cheese sandwiches are perfect for the holidays because they are made with cheese and bread, two things you always have on hand.” She recommends using cheese from Europe because of their richness and complexity. Instead of cookies and cocoa, think toasty, warm, gooey grilled cheese sandwiches after skating, at tree trimming parties, pre- or post-caroling, hiking or just watching weekend football. Cut into small squares, grilled cheese sandwiches even make a sophisticated appetizer at holiday parties. Create holiday memories with a new regular tradition by leaving a grilled cheese sandwich for Santa instead of a plate of cookies.

Not only are grilled cheese sandwiches warm and comforting, they are packed with protein and calcium and are a convenient snack or meal everyone loves. But there are a few secrets to making the perfect grilled cheese, like using French butter, which has a higher smoke point and makes the bread golden and crispy. Or if you’re using a hard cheeses, grating them first so they melt with ease.

Truly great grilled cheese sandwiches don’t take endless shopping trips or hours to prepare. Many recipes can be made with pantry staple ingredients like onions, bacon and jam. Try the Two Cheese Double Down with Raclette and Mimolette, two of France’s tastiest cheeses, melted together in a pan and dripped over Bayonne Ham or The French Onion with Comte Cheese with sautéed mushrooms and onions or The Country King with Brie, honey crisp apples and Smoked country ham.

According to Charles Duque, Director, The French Dairy Board for the Americas “Grilled cheese sandwiches are popular on both sides of the pond and are particularly good when paired with beer, including seasonal Winter beers.”.
